SPANISH MILITARY
CADET SWORD?
|
I have been unable to positively identify this sword, but my best guess is Spanish Military Cadet. It is very similar to the Spanish Machete Modelo 1836 (para cadete del Real Colegio de Artilleria), but also the Spanish Engineer's Sword Model of 1878; I do not believe this one is older than that. My guess is from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.
Overall length is ~24".
Hilt is ~5-3/4" in length - including langets - and ~5-5/8" not including langets; hilt width is ~4-1/2" at the crossguard. Construction is entirely of metal, and was nickel-plated (about half remaining). The grip is patterned with 8 vertical lines, upper and lower integral ferrules; crossguard gas ball finials, with center diamond-shaped ornament. Oval-shaped pommel with three "cannon balls"; ball finial on pommel-cap.
Double-edged, un-fullered steel blade is ~18-3/4" in length; tip is cropped in cadet style, with blunted, exaggerated "V" tip. Blade width is ~15/16" at the ricasso. medial rib runs from ricasso to the tip of the blade, both sides.
It is very possible that this is nothing more than just a close-copy fraternal sword. A comparable sword is listed in the Ames Sword Company catalog of the late 1800's on page 196 as item number 676 under Military Association - Short Swords, "Brass Mounted, Leather Scabbard."
