South African "Transvaal (OVS)"
Model 1896 "Sawback" Bayonet

These bayonets are very similar to the German Infantry-Gewehr Model 1871 Bayonet and the German Model 1871 "Hirschfanger" Bayonet; the German influence is very apparent. The obvious difference is the rearward-swept lower quillon (the reverse of the German Model 1871).
According to Janzen - "this bayonet was produced for the Boers for use in their war with the British."

The hilts are cast-brass, steel crossguard, with rearward-swept lower quillon (upper quillon is the muzzle-ring).
The blades have a saw on the back-edge, lower edge is the true "cutting" edge; single-fullered both sides of blade.
Scabbards are brass-mounted black leather (not shown).
