US 1826 Nathan Starr - Contract Navy Cutlass

This is a Nathan Starr Naval Cutlass from the 1826 US contract. The US Government placed an order for 2,000 of these with Nathan Starr in 1826 and all were delivered by 1827.
These swords are easily recognized by the odd angle at which the blade enters the hilt.
This example is of iron hilt construction, wooden grip (ribbed maple); steel blade, medium curve. This style sword was eventually replaced by the US Model 1841 Navy Cutlass.
