British Pattern 1879 Sword Bayonet,
aka Artillery Carbine "Sawback" Bayonet,
Circa 1879-1900


This is a scarce British Pattern 1879 Artillery Carbine "Sawback" bayonet, in use from about 1879 to about 1900. They were designed to fit the Martini-Henry Artillery Carbine.

Overall length is ~31-3/8". Blade length is ~25-7/8". Blade width at ricasso is ~1-3/16" and ~1/4" thick. Back-edge has 20 diamond-shaped saw-teeth in an offset SxS pattern. Spearpoint tip. Single-fullered blade (both sides), fullers ~14" in length.

Original bayonet is in overall very-good condition, with lightly scattered pitting, mostly over the last 4" of the blade. Blade should clean up nicely.

Original scabbard is black leather with sheet steel throat and drag.
