This knife or short sword has not been positively identified at this time, but believe it to be from the region of Tibet of Thailand if not some surrounding region in close proximity. Hilt and scabbard are made of wood and carved. The hilt is carved to represent a standing figure, the pommel cap being the head; the scabbard is carved with five faces and two serpents/snakes on either side. Brass ferrule around bottom of grip.
Blade is flat on reverse side, obverse side has a raised medial rib. Single-edged. Blade has a very Japanese appearance.
Good condition with the following major exceptions noted: Grip appears to be slightly bent upward beginning at the tang; longitudinal crack propagating full length of grip body. Piece missing from scabbard drag.
Overall length in scabbard is ~25-1/4"; overall length out of scabbard is ~22"; blade length is ~16-1/2".

This is a U.S. Model 1855 Saber bayonet - used extensively during the Civil War - originally on the US Model 1855 Percussion Rifle. These rifles and bayonets saw hard use. This one has very obviously been converted to a side-arm, and is about the size of a good Bowie or hunting knife. Very crude shaping of the blade, but clearly a reduced bayonet blade; handle has obviously been removed and re-positioned at some time and is held in place by a model nail. Solid brass hilt and steel blade are battered and worn (see images).
Overall length is scabbard is ~14-5/8"; overall length out of scabbard is ~14-1/2"; blade length is ~9-3/4".
Scabbard is handmade and I cannot determine age; it is leather and crudely hand-stitched with leather and wire.
