Militia or Cadet Sword, No Scabbard
$115.00 $95.00 On Sale!
1MILITIA006A

Militia or cadet sword believed circa mid-1800s. Wood grip wrapped in leather, bound with decorative brass wire, nickel-brass composition furniture. Hilt cross-guard displays a mustachioed soldier in a plumed helmet flanked by crossed gladius-style short artillery swords, each sword displaying a star in center of their cross-guards. believe this may be a Texas Military Academy sword, I just do not know which. Wide ~1-1/8" combat-worthy blade, ~26-1/2" in length, unfullered, raised medial rib, diamond-shaped in cross-section. Overall length is ~32-1/2". Unknown maker.
Hilt is fairly tight but missing some of the leather wrap; blade tip has been reshaped and sharpened, otherwise good condition.

Model 1840 Horse Artillery Saber, 1862, unknown mfg.
$925.00 $750.00 On Sale!
1840HAS1862CONN005A

Model 1840 Horse Artillery Saber of unknown manufacture. It is 1862 dated and the letters CONN are clearly visible. My first impression was this may be a Collins of Hartford, Connecticut, but they are not known to have had any US government contracts for the US Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber (I suppose it could have been a State contract). I am not aware of any other maker from Connecticut that had a contract for these regulation sabers. My next thoughts were that perhaps it could be Confederate. I am aware of swords sold by James Conning of Mobile, Alabama and he is known to have sold Model 1840 Light Artillery Sabers to the State of Alabama and perhaps to the CSA The State swords are not known to have been marked in this fashion. The CONN in CONNING could fit but that may be a stretch; however, James Conning was known for silver-smithing before he moved to Alabama and this sword shows evidence of silver on the guard at the ricasso and on the pommel near the guard. Another marking of note is the identification number 46B on the blade ricasso over the CONN and date of 1862. This is not normal US marking so perhaps it could be southern? I cannot say for certain on any of this but it does demand further serious research. It bears no foreign proofs or typical markings associated with French swords of the same style.
Overall length is ~37-1/2"; blade length is ~32". Good condition overall. Grip has most of its leather intact but is missing almost all of its twisted brass wire wrap.
NOTE: No Scabbard.

Sword Cane with Wood Scabbard
$225.00 $175.00 On Sale!
swordcane001a

Unusual old sword cane with horn grip, "turk's head-band" ferrule; wood scabbard with rolled-sheet-metal drag.
Old blade believed to be at least 100-200 years old; engraving on near ricasso is a floral motif; maker-marked with a pattern very close to that used by the Wundes families of Solingen, Germany, although there are what also appears to be some Chinese characters (very unusual); perhaps from the period of the Boxer Rebellion since this is generally a European style.
