Maratha Pata Gauntlet Sword #2, Southern India
$795.00 $636.00 On Sale!
2MPATAGS002A

The Maratha Pata or gauntlet sword is believed to have been used by expert swordsmen and uniquely suited to horsemen. The steel gauntlet covers the hand, wrist, and some of the forearm. The sword is held by employing two mechanisms within the gauntlet - the hand is inserted into the gauntlet past a serpentine floating metal cross-bar, up to the mid-forearm (between the wrist and elbow), then grasping a floating metal pipe surrounding a rigid center cross-bar, the hand making a fist around the floating pipe. The flex of the forearm muscle and the grip of the hand make this fit very snug. Padding would have originally been lining the inner gauntlet and perhaps a glove was also worn. This sword becomes an effective extension of the arm. Blade is quite fexible and it is believed they are like this as to bend or give when striking a more solid object, minimizing the possibility of unhorseing the rider wielding the sword.
This Pata most likely dates from the 17th or 18th century. Overall length is ~55"; blade length is ~41".
NOTE: No scabbard included with this sword.
Good condition.

Militia or Cadet Sword, No Scabbard
$115.00 $95.00 On Sale!
1MILITIA006A

Militia or cadet sword believed circa mid-1800s. Wood grip wrapped in leather, bound with decorative brass wire, nickel-brass composition furniture. Hilt cross-guard displays a mustachioed soldier in a plumed helmet flanked by crossed gladius-style short artillery swords, each sword displaying a star in center of their cross-guards. believe this may be a Texas Military Academy sword, I just do not know which. Wide ~1-1/8" combat-worthy blade, ~26-1/2" in length, unfullered, raised medial rib, diamond-shaped in cross-section. Overall length is ~32-1/2". Unknown maker.
Hilt is fairly tight but missing some of the leather wrap; blade tip has been reshaped and sharpened, otherwise good condition.

Model 1840 Horse Artillery Saber, 1862, unknown mfg.
$925.00 $740.00 On Sale!
1840HAS1862CONN005A

Model 1840 Horse Artillery Saber of unknown manufacture. It is 1862 dated and the letters CONN are clearly visible. My first impression was this may be a Collins of Hartford, Connecticut, but they are not known to have had any US government contracts for the US Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber (I suppose it could have been a State contract). I am not aware of any other maker from Connecticut that had a contract for these regulation sabers. My next thoughts were that perhaps it could be Confederate. I am aware of swords sold by James Conning of Mobile, Alabama and he is known to have sold Model 1840 Light Artillery Sabers to the State of Alabama and perhaps to the CSA The State swords are not known to have been marked in this fashion. The CONN in CONNING could fit but that may be a stretch; however, James Conning was known for silver-smithing before he moved to Alabama and this sword shows evidence of silver on the guard at the ricasso and on the pommel near the guard. Another marking of note is the identification number 46B on the blade ricasso over the CONN and date of 1862. This is not normal US marking so perhaps it could be southern? I cannot say for certain on any of this but it does demand further serious research. It bears no foreign proofs or typical markings associated with French swords of the same style.
Overall length is ~37-1/2"; blade length is ~32". Good condition overall. Grip has most of its leather intact but is missing almost all of its twisted brass wire wrap.
NOTE: No Scabbard.

Short Artillery/Sappers Sword, unknown origin, mid-1800s
$297.25
1AUSTRIANSS002CP

This is a short sword/hanger - or very large Bowie-style knife - believed to date form the mid to late 1800s. Unknown origin, not positively identified. The Austrians had a number of similar "sapper's and miners" as well as artillery short swords throughout the 1800s into WWI so it may be one of theirs. Various illegible stampings on the cross-guard.
Overall length is ~26-1/4"; blade length is ~20-1/4" including the ~4-1/2" clip-point false-edge; width at ricasso is ~1/4"; blade height is ~2-1/4" at cross-guard.

Spanish Modelo 1860 Machete for Cuban Civil Guard
$145.00
1860cubaspancvlgrd001

These uncommon short swords or machetes are Spanish in origin but were used in Cuba by their Civil Guard units from about 1860 to about 1898. They originally were equipped with a brown leather scabbard with brass throat and drag; this one appears to be a second type or field replacement and appears to have been with it for a very long time; it is only a partial scabbard and appears to have been entirely made of black leather, but could have utilized a metal drag; it does have a belt hanger or frog attached, so I believe it to be a regulation variant. Wood mameluke or pistol-grip style hilt, wood grips, with brass S-shape cross-guard.
Overall length is ~23-5/8"; blade length is ~18-1/8".
Blade has scattered light pitting and is dark oxide colored overall (should clean up quite a bit). Scabbard is a bit worse for wear. Overall condition about fair.

Overall length is ~28-1/2"; yatagan or re-curved blade is ~23-1/16" in length.
Scabbard is black leather body with sheet steel throat and drag. Scabbard has shrunken from age and is becoming somewhat fragile; complete scabbards are scarce if not rare on these swords.
Good to very-good condition overall.

Spanish Modelo 1900 Security Forces Machete, scarce

This is a scarce sword or machete designated the Spanish Model 1900 Machete for Security Forces (Machete Modelo 1900 para Fuerzas de Seguridad de Espanola). Straight, blunt, unsharpened blade, single-edged, rounded tip. Scabbard is of black leather body with brass throat (and should have a brass drag but that is missing on this example).
Overall length is ~33-1/4"; blade length is ~27-3/8"; width at ricasso is ~1-3/8"; thickness is ~1/4".
Blade has scattered light surface rust, red oxide in color (should clean up nicely). Scabbard is partial and a bit worse for wear; drag and lower portion of scabbard is missing (see images).
