French Model 1874 Gras Bayonet with Scabbard, Usine de Steyr 1878
USINEDESTEYR1878GRAS001
French Model 1874 Gras Bayonet manufactured in Steyr, Austria 1878, marked Usine de Steyr 1878; these are not common. Brass pommel, wood grips, with a spring steel latching arrangement on the right side. The crossguard is iron (steel) and has a riveted non-adjustable muzzle-ring. The lower quillon is a hooked "blade-breaker" type. The straight blade is steel, triple-edged T-backed and un-fullered.
Overall length in scabbard is ~25-7/8"; overall length out of scbbard is ~25-1/4"; blade length is ~20-1/2". Blade is marked in script on the back-edge (opposite the cutting edge) with the arsenal and year of manufacture; this is done in engraved cursive fashion.
Good condition overall. Bayonet and scabbard have been coated in varnish; this was a common practice usually done by museums to prevent rusting from handling/outside elements.
