Head Ax, Philippines, Bontok
1KALINGA001A
This is one of the various styles of "head axes" used by the head-hunting tribes of the Philippines, believed Bontok but sometimes referred as Kalinga. These are easily recognized by an angled or inward-curved convex cutting edge, balanced by a spike at the rear.
Multi-purpose in design, these are used as both weapon and tool.
Ax dimensions are as follows: Overall length is ~16"; head width from cutting edge upper tip to rear spike tip is ~8-11/16"; head height is ~3-1/4"; head thickness is ~3/16" at base progessing to ~1/8" at the top. Shaft is wood covered by a steel ferrule over ~7", extending from the base of the head; ~3/4" steel pommel cap on butt of shaft. Unusual on this example is the number "217" displayed on the shaft near the pommel cap; also, a name is attached to the pommel cap butt (see images). Very good condition overall.
