Nice pair of small tulwars, believed wootz blades; iron hilted, believed gold wash over copper. They need cleaning. Langets on one are bent slightly inward towards the blade.
Blade lengths average ~22" from tip to junction of cutting edge and hilt. Blades have been covered with varnish - apparently for protection - and must be cleaned. No obvious blade defects.
Overall lengths is average ~26-3/4" with lanyard ring extended.
NOTE: No scabbards.
This set of tulwars was tagged [one tag is now missing] stating "... Tulwar from the Battle of Chillianwalla June 13th 1849 ...to me by my uncle Field Marshal Sir N....who fought there."
"The Battle of Chillianwala is described as ‘the last attempt of the army of Ranjit Singh to recover independence’. The battle of Chillianwala ranks as one of the most awesome encounters of the Second Anglo Sikh Wars. Fought on the 13th January, 1849...so fierce was the battle, and so much the loss suffered by the British here, that it created great disquiet in England. The Sikh army had planned well, forming themselves in majestic battle array along the furrowed hills. Bushes masked their batteries, and compact infantry and cavalry were marshalled with exactness. The battle was furious. At the end of the day, with the battle lasting well into the night, the Sikhs left some of their positions, leading to the British claiming a victory. But it was the Sikhs who fired gun salutes in celebration of a great triumph. The losses on both sides were enormous, and the records show that the Khalsa army had fought with great courage and determination." - source Anglo Sikh Heritage Trail
