Original box-spurs for attachment to Wellington and ankle boots equipped with spur box; ~3" wide, ~4-3/4" long. Manufacturer unknown but logo is a spur flanked by C and H. Believed manufactured before 1890. Nickel alloy. Round rowels with star pattern; swan-neck style shank with decorative faux slot screw heads where strap studs would normally be positioned.
A London spur maker invented the true box spur in the early nineteenth century. The metal prong between the arms of the spur, slots into a spring-loaded "box" in the heel of the boot. This design meant that the hole in the boot could not clog with dirt, and that the spurs did not require additional straps and buckles.
"Box spurs date back to the wearing of overalls by the army. Not all military spurs were box spurs, sometimes hunting or jack spurs were worn (particularly by the Life Guards & Horse Guards). As breeches and boots were introduced to the cavalry uniform, the box spur became part of mess dress." (Ref : "History of the Spur", Charles de Lacy)
