German Model 1871 Infantry Dress Bayonet with Scabbard. These bayonets were intended to be used as sidearms only, as they have no slot in the pommel to attach to the bar on a barrel; they have a muzzle-ring only and a false release spring without push-button. According to Janzen, page 80, No.1, these were, "private purchase for 'walking out' off-duty. Also used by Infanterie Kadeten in military schools...produced into the 1900s and has very light 'rolled-on' etching on the blade.
I have two of these listed for sale; this one is the second. This particular example is ~25" overall length in scabbard; ~24" overall length out of scabbard; steel unfullered blade length is ~19-3/4" and etched with floral/panoply of arms motif. The blade has a maker-mark of "scales" ricasso flat, left side, near the cross-guard (see images). This leads me to believe it was manufactured by Alexander Coppel of Solingen, Germany before 1930.
Cast brass grip with steel "S-shape" cross-guard. Black leather scabbard with brass throat and drag; scabbard length is ~20-1/2"; the scabbard has shrunk a bit as the blade will not seat entirely in the scabbard (see images).
Good to very-good condition overall with very minor blemishes.
