This knife or short sword is known as a Moro "Barong" (also called a machete) and was used by the fierce, warlike Moro Tribes of the Phillipines. The Moro was the last tribe of peoples to be subdued during the Phillipine Insurrection by "Black Jack" Pershing. This example is believed to date from the late 1800s to early 1900s.
Wood hilt with nicely carved rectangular lower "bird's-head pommel. Metal ferrules, perhaps silver.
Wood scabbard tastefully carved with decorations.
Overall length of this barong in scabbard is ~24-3/4"; overall length out of scabbard is ~23-1/4"; blade length is ~16-1/2" and very sharp.
Good to very-good condition overall; scabbard is slightly separated at the seams (should repair easily); long split in both sides (see images).
