Socket bayonet originally for use on the Dornbuchse M/1849 rifles circa 1849-1851, converted and reissued as the Suhler Tapriffel Model 1854.
Unique locking spring designed by Johan Christian Wilken Kyhl, first introduced in 1794. The Kyhl spring catch was used on Danish bayonets from 1794-1860. Re-issue is obvious as the original serial number "1680" has been canceled and re-issue serial number "1015" has been stamped above. Re-issue year is also present "1854". German proof "crown over W" is stamped into shank.
These bayonets are also known to have been used on their corresponding muskets during the American Civil War, acquired by various agents in Europe from the North and South.
Good condition overall.
