These uncommon short swords or machetes are Spanish in origin but were used in Cuba by their Civil Guard units from about 1860 to about 1898. They originally were equipped with a brown leather scabbard with brass throat and drag; this one appears to be a second type or field replacement and appears to have been with it for a very long time; it is only a partial scabbard and appears to have been entirely made of black leather, but could have utilized a metal drag; it does have a belt hanger or frog attached, so I believe it to be a regulation variant. Wood mameluke or pistol-grip style hilt, wood grips, with brass S-shape cross-guard.
Overall length is ~23-5/8"; blade length is ~18-1/8".
Blade has scattered light pitting and is dark oxide colored overall (should clean up quite a bit). Scabbard is a bit worse for wear. Overall condition about fair.
