A wonderful reproduction, placed mid-way in time between the end of the Civil War and the turn of the century, this large 1876 dated double folio map - from a S.A. Mitchell General Atlas which kept the entire state intact - included New Mexico and Indian Territories and even included a large scale map of Galveston, the largest city in Texas at the time. It is one of the very few major Atlas maps that shows the entire state.
This map is also significant for its subtle but effective use of hand wash water color in a time when the trend was to harsh and bright colors or simple outline color. In addition, this map shows most of the early frontier forts as well as those created and manned after the Civil War. Although dated 1876, it was probably engraved several years earlier. Available in 16x20, 18x24, and 24x36 inch sizes.
