In use during the reign of King Charles I (1516-1556), this was flown by the forces of explorer Alonso De Pineda during his exploration of the Gulf of Mexico, from Florida to Vera Cruz in 1519; also during the conquest of Mexico by forces under Hernando Cortes 1519 to 1521.

The castle on the field of red represented the house of Castille and the red lion rampant on the white field represented Leon, hence castles and lions. This Spanish flag of Ferdinand and Isabella reflected these united Kingdoms of Spain.

This flag has been in use since the Crusades and was recognizable as one of the national banners of England as early as 1277. In 1497, this flag was flown by John and Sebastian Cabot on their voyages from England to Newfoundland and the North American continent, and was flown by other English explorers such as Sir Francis Drake, Sir Humphrey Gilbert, and Sir Walter Raleigh. This flag was flying above the Mayflower when it landed at Plymouth in 1620.
