Early Persian Jambiya, Islamic

Item #1KPJAM1001
SOLD

The jambiya is a uniquely Islamic knife and may be found in every country - although in variant forms - in which the Arabs have lived or wielded influence. This example is believed to be Persian. It is elaborately decorated - although quite crudely - as are most of the jambiyas found from these regions. It is either a pewter or low-grade silver (or perhaps a combination of both) hilt with small designs of gold filigree. The scabbard is encased in like materials as the hilt, in like fashion. The blade is unusual in that it has laminated side panels of the same materials as the scabbard and hilt, with the blade sandwiched in between. The side panels have de-laminated from the blade iron - I believe due to heavy oxidation of the blade-iron - and flex outward away from the blade when removed from the scabbard.
Another interesting feature about the blade is that is has a "forked" tip - in that it has three tines - with the center tine being about 2" longer; the purpose of this has not yet been determined - but it was most likely used for piercing chain-mail (I have a mail shirt here and it works quite nicely between the chain links); the result is five actual points. I have been told this added additional "shock power" (reference Levine's Guide to Knives and their Values, Section III, Persia JAMBIYA). It is very unusual indeed. Dating this jambiya has proved difficult since mail has been in use from the 12th to 19th centuries; this one is believed to be from about the 18th to 19th century. This was apparently a very nasty weapon. Overall length is ~20".

This jambiya was purchased by a client in 1960 at an "arms" bazaar within Damascus, Syria.

Overall condition is good to very-good, except as noted above.

"Arkansas Toothpick"
"CSA" etched on blade
No Scabbard

SOLD

Unique "Arkansas Toothpick" hunting/combat knife; very nice condition and well made. I am unable to positively date this knife - as I have do not know of any examples exactly like it; however, it is consistent with the same type knife known to have been carried by "Southerners" during the American Civil War. The "Arkansas Toothpick" and the massive "Bowie" knives were the two most common - and well known - knife designs carried - as combat weapons - by various Confederate soldiers.

Overall length of this knife is ~18";

The hilt is ~5-1/8" in length (including crossguard thickness ~3/16"); grip material appears to be "stag" and appears to have some sort of "lacquer" finish; pommel plate is of white metal (possibly silver or silver-plate) and is held in place by two filed-head nails; crossguard is of a white metal (also possibly silver or nickel-silver).

Blade length is ~12-1/4"; CSA is etched onto right side of blade along with a "grapevine" motif; right side of blade has an early American style "Bald Eagle," possibly a vulture; below the eagle is the motto DEO VINDE (which is a variation of the motto below the official Confederate Seal "Deo Vindice" meaning "God will Vindicate") and above the eagle is the same grapevine motif as found on the right side. Dark oxide overall with no pitting or evidence of sharpening.

I have several thoughts on this knife: It appears that it could have been cut-down from a period Confederate foot artillery sword; additionally, it is either an authentic knife and should be in a museum, or that it is obviously a finely crafted knife - by someone that had knowledge of white- and black-smithing as well as period jeweler's etching techniques - and that makes the knife worth every bit of the asking price due to quality of workmanship and originality.

US Navy Mark 2 Combat Knife,
Robeson Shuredge

SOLD

Item #1KUSM2RKNF
Very-Good to Fine Condition

This is another WWII design combat/utility knife, designated the US Navy Mark 2 Combat Knife. This style knife was very sturdy in design and is still manufactured to this day. These were made by various manufacturers, but the most commonly referred to is the Kabar, which has become the generic name for these Mark 2 combat knives. Other manufacturers were: Camillus, PAL, Conetta, Utica, Kutmaster, Ontario, and Robeson. The most rare of all is the Robeson-marked USMC version.

This particular example is marked on the blade, ROBESON SHUREDGE, on the right ricasso; left side is marked USN / Mark 2.
Pommel cap is peened-on, not screwed-on; grooved-leather grip; Parkerized blade and other exposed metal.

Scabbard is correct USN / Mk2 grey plastic (fiberglass); reverse is marked NORD - 8114 / B.M.Co. vp.

Overall condition is about very-good to fine, but lower cross-guard is slightly bent rearward. Overall, a good honest example of a US Navy Mark 2 Combat Knife.

US M3 Combat Knife, Imperial

SOLD

Item #1KUSM3KNF
Good Condition

This is another WWII utility knife, designated the M3 Trench Knife or M3 Combat Knife. This knife was the first in a series of military knives and bayonets, utilizing the M3 blade. The early M3 knives were maker-marked on the blades; later knives were marked on the cross-guard. This knife is an early one and is marked US M3 IMPERIAL on the blade.

Blade finish could have been Parkerizing, but might have been simply blued; it is hard to tell. The cross-guard and pommel appear to be blued. The grip is of the stacked-leather-washer type.

Overall condition is about good, but the blade has been well used; several nicks are noticable, tip is lightly blunted, and evidence of sharpening is quite obvious. Leather grip has a number of nicks and other blemishes. Overall, a good honest combat knife.

Scabbard is correct M8, fiberglass, green, with initials stamped into the reverse side. Scabbard is split at the bottom reverse tip.
